Description: The Direct Instruction model is a model that uses teacher demonstration and explanation combined with student practice and feedback to help learners acquire well-defined knowledge and skills needed for future learning.
Reflection on in-class presentation: In this elementary math lesson, the teachers briefly reviewed the material from the previous lesson and then introduced the new material. After the introduction of the new material, the teachers played a short video for the students, then asked for five students to come to the front of the class and demonstrate what the video had taught them. After this, the teachers began to further instruct and clarify the new material by lecturing and asking questions to keep students involved and for the teachers to gauge the intake of the new material throughout the students. After the instruction, the teachers began a guided practice with the students to ensure the students are on task and filling in the correct answers on their worksheets. This model was utilized well in this lesson plan because of guided and independent practice to assess the students, and the presentation through examples, lecture, and questioning.
In the high school demonstration of the DI model, the students were introduced a new topic, then the new topic was presented to them on the over head projector with step by step instruction, followed by while class practice problems with the teacher. After the group wide practice the students were instructed to practice individually for an in class and homework grade. This lesson plan followed the Direct-Instruction model excellently because of provided instruction, followed by guided and individual practice.
